IS PRESERVING DEMOCRACY YOUR BIG PICTURE? is a keynote designed for school boards and superintendents who feel pulled in a hundred directions-and need to re‑anchor their work in one unifying purpose. I ask leaders to step back from the urgent and reconsider the ultimate: are your decisions, habits, and priorities helping preserve American democracy, or are they unintentionally weakening it?
I speak from the vantage point of someone who has sat in nearly every chair around the K-12 table: trustee, interim superintendent, assistant superintendent/CBO, and CPA‑auditor. That 360‑degree view allows me to connect your daily governance challenges-budget debates, labor negotiations, curriculum disputes, social media storms-to the quieter, deeper work of forming citizens who can sustain self‑government.
During the keynote, I walk your board through four "big picture" lenses: stewardship of public funds, protection of viewpoint diversity, modeling civil disagreement, and ensuring that every student experiences school as a place where their rights and responsibilities are real. I use concrete boardroom stories, not theory, to illustrate how small process changes-agenda design, data use, communication norms-can shift a district's democratic culture.
